Holistic Prevention: Keeping Yourself Safe from Tick Transmitted Disease

While the warm weather draws nature very quickly and for us to relationship again to earth, to move our bodies, and soak up some rays, it's also the season of that little creature which, while harmless in appearance, does a world of damage: ticks. Despite their appearance, they cause Lyme disease, and their bite sends the body through a multitude of further physical, emotional, and neurological chronic issues, unless caught early.

So rather than letting fear prevent you from going outside, take a holistic approach to tick prevention: awareness, natural repellents, lifestyle habits, and catching the little beast as early as possible.

The Tick and Lyme Connection and Why It Matters

Before we get to the prevention part, understand how ticks are capable of ticks transmit Lyme disease in the first place.

The black-legged ticks(deer ticks) keep a spiral bacterium called Borrelia burgdorferi. After attaching for 24-36 hours with the bite of a tick in human, the bacterium can then get into the blood stream to create an infection which we would call Lyme disease.

What makes Lyme disease particularly tricky is that it can mimic other conditions. This is why it is so crucial to be aware of early signs of long-term infection.

Early Symptoms of Lyme Disease

The earlier a person will generally catch Lyme disease, the easier it will be to treat the disease before it possibly becomes chronic. Symptoms normally show up anywhere from three to thirty days post-bite and can vary from person to person.

Watch out for these early signs:

  • The bull’s eye rash (erythema migrans) – develops in about 70-80% of those infected, usually at the bite site.
  • Flu-like symptoms: fatigue, fever, chills, muscle and joint pain, and headaches
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Neck and light sensitivity
  • Joint pains- Involving mostly larger joints, such as knees.

There are also some people who may not develop any rash hence it is important to listen to what our individual body experience of outdoors states. And when in doubt, trust your instincts and get checked out.
